A goal in my home is to have function for every space. It only took the coming holidays to get this space I’ve been tweaking for years finally complete. With modern touches and adequate amount of seating for our family, it’s a space we enjoy multiple times a day now!
Here’s a little timeline glimpse at where we began to where we are now.
Pretty bland, huh?
We then added the wallpaper, but our table we found in the dumpster when we first got married was small. We also only had two chairs, which was useless for a now family of four.
And now. Subtle changes make all the difference!
Lets start with the rug.
We currently have linoleum in our kitchen, which we hope to change in the next few years. To mask the surface and make this space its own, I added a natural jute rug that actually fits the space. I played around with different colors and patterns, really wanting to add a fun design element. But ultimately, I decided that the wallpaper and green cabinets were enough “fun design elements” for a small space. Also, this jute rug hides all the crumbs from my toddler and baby so well!
Now onto the seating.
For the past couple years, I had envisioned a built-in banquette. Not only would it be a big job and several hundred dollars, it would make this small space way too crowded.
My solution: a bench! It has, hands down, been the best addition to our kitchen. My 3-year-old loves eating her meals on the bench, and it’s given us extra seating for three extra people without making a large footprint. I love the leather wrapping and modern, tapered natural wood legs of this bench from AllModern. It will be a staple in our kitchen for many years!
I also spray painted my white thrifted chairs flat black. It was not the popular opinion on my Instagram stories, but in the grand scheme of the space, it was the best choice.
The modern holiday touches
I love to add in seasonal items that already coordinates with my décor. For example, if I added red and black buffalo check in here, it would look completely out of place.
Instead, adding in natural elements (like the wooden tree) and touches of pink (my Christmas plates and pillows), keeps with the décor of my space while also adding in some Christmas cheer.
The Table
The table was an incredible thrifted find that you can read more about how I refinished it HERE.
